Hemp seeds health benefits and a healthy hemp smoothie recipe are the topics today on One Food, Two Nerds – Where health nerd Sophie Uliano teams up with history and science nerd Dan Kohler to explore the history, nutritional benefits and uses of some of today’s most talked about foods in healthy eating!!
Hemp is synonymous with plant-based protein. When you think “hemp,” don’t think marijuana or cannabis, think of the superfood that contains 10 essential amino acids! It comes in many forms – seeds, powder, oil – However you use hemp, just be sure to keep it in the fridge. We use the nemonic device “Oil spoils.” Hemp is naturally oily, and can go rancid if unrefrigerated.
Hemp Smoothie
INGREDIENTS
– 4 to 6 oz of coconut water
– 1/2 of a banana
– 1 cup blueberries
– a handful of spinach or other greens
– 4 tbsp hemp seeds
DIRECTIONS
Combine all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Top with additional hemp seeds, and enjoy!
